In the spring of 1967,  a unique publicity campaign was organized to promote the opening of the Alberta St. John’s School. The Gr. 8 students from the Manitoba school would paddle from the Alberta school site on the North Saskatchewan River to the Manitoba school on the Red River. Each week, Ted Byfield wrote a bulletin of their progress, this was passed on to a crew of volunteers in Edmonton and sent out to 3,000 Albertans asking for support.

Many of the students on this trip were from Alberta and would enroll in the new school once it opened it’s doors in the fall of 1968.
