At the Manitoba school for years this bell brought students to classes, assemblies and meals. It also heralded the return of the canoe brigades – it was rung as a greeting for the boys’ arrival, carrying down the river for miles.
Shortly after the Manitoba school closed in 1990, the bell arrived at an Edmonton truck centre, with just the name St. John’s School of Alberta on it. After a search for us – the trucking company phoned and the bell was picked up; it is still in the bell tower at the front entrance of the school.
It was a mystery as to who arranged for the bell to be sent west.
