Through the years, each of the St. John’s schools offered what were referred to as “marquis” canoe trips. These were planned as a break from the usual fare – the Churchill River or the Methye trips in Alberta; the Grand or the Gammon Rivers in Manitoba. For the Manitoba guys in the earlier years it was a trip from Montreal to New York. In Alberta it might be the Nechacko River or the McKenzie River. Not many students had the chance to do these trips because they were run only every few years.

One such trip was the 1971 Columbia River trip. These photos show some interesting adventures.
