The first foray into door-to-door sales for the students was undertaken by the Manitoba school, and involved selling chicken and pork products. Many of the old guys will remember the Christmas “baskets”, filled with hams, bacon and such; and the many hours on the phone trying to convince people they needed to support St. John’s through that endeavour. (The first telemarketers!) When the decision was made to go full scale with the meat sales, a business model had to include the production plant – or meat room. Probably most students and staff from these era had the chance to work in the meat room, and to learn skills you may still use today.
