While scanning negatives in the archives, I came across these photos that speak to their era of canoeing.
There are so many details in each one that they should inspire some memories! Aside from the alarm clocks, the double exposure on the second photo is very interesting.

Looks to me like its Geoff Norquay and Paul Westal on the 1961 Grand Forks to Winnipeg cutter race. Westal was the cox on the St John which won the race. The clocks are being set for the 0315 wake up for the 0500 start time on each race day which went to around 1 in the afternoon due to the heat of the day. The St John won possibly due to the fact that we passed the St Andrew still beached one morning having missed the start time for some reason-maybe they had a bad clock? Frank Wiens and ( I think Alfie Philpott)were the referees in their own outboard following us but not giving wake up calls!
I think Mike Maunder was our cox on the 1962 race but can’t remember who else was cox. I do recall Grant Ross and I were the strokes on the 62 race.
